Figuring out what to wear for family photos can feel like one of the hardest parts of planning your session. You want everyone to coordinate. You want the photos to feel beautiful and timeless. But most importantly, you still want your family to look like your family.
As a San Jose family photographer, I always tell families that you don’t need to completely reinvent your wardrobe for photos. Instead, choose pieces that feel comfortable, complement each other, and work well with your session location.
Here are my favorite tips for deciding what to wear for family photos in San Jose.
Choose a Color Palette Instead of Matching Outfits
Gone are the days when everyone needs to show up in matching white shirts and jeans.
Instead, choose a color palette with a few shades that work well together. Then, let each family member wear something slightly different within that palette.
I love photographing soft neutrals like cream, beige, camel, and tan. Earthy colors like olive, rust, mustard, and brown also photograph beautifully. Muted shades like sage, dusty blue, and blush can add a little color without taking attention away from your family.
The goal is to coordinate, not match.
One easy way to get started is to choose one outfit first. I often recommend starting with mom. Find something you feel amazing in, then pull colors from that outfit to help choose everyone else’s clothing.
Consider Your Family Photo Location
Your location can help guide your outfit choices, too.
San Jose has so much variety when it comes to family photo locations. We have open fields, rolling hills, oak trees, historic areas, and plenty of that beautiful California golden light.
Before choosing your outfits, think about the colors and textures at your location. You don’t need to perfectly match the scenery. However, choosing colors that complement it can help your final gallery feel cohesive.

Keep Patterns Simple for Family Pictures
Patterns are totally okay!
However, I recommend avoiding too many competing patterns at once. If one family member wears a patterned dress, for example, you can pull a few colors from that pattern and use them for everyone else.
This creates visual interest without making your family photos feel busy.
I also recommend avoiding large logos, graphics, and super-bright or neon colors. Those details can quickly draw your eye away from the people in the photo.
And remember, everyone does not need to wear the exact same color. A little variety creates depth and makes your photos feel much more natural.
Wear Something That Actually Feels Like You
This might be my biggest piece of advice.
Your family photos should still feel like you.
If you never wear dresses, you don’t have to suddenly wear one because you saw it on Pinterest. If your child hates a certain outfit, session day probably isn’t the best time to convince them to love it.
Comfort matters because I want you to be able to move during your family session. I want you to play with your kids. Snuggle together. Walk. Laugh. Pick up your toddler. And focus on your family instead of constantly adjusting uncomfortable clothes.
Natural fabrics like cotton and linen can also photograph beautifully while keeping outfits relaxed and comfortable.
Where to Shop for Family Photo Outfits
You also don’t need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your session.
Start by shopping your own closet. You might already have the perfect base outfit and only need one or two pieces to pull everything together.
If you do want something new, there are plenty of great places to look. For women, stores like Baltic Born, Lulus, Madewell, and Nordstrom can be great starting points. For kids, I love the soft colors and simple styles you can often find from brands like Rylee + Cru and Quincy Mae.
Pinterest can also help you visualize how different colors and textures work together. Use it for inspiration, but don’t feel like you have to recreate someone else’s family outfits exactly.
The Best Family Photo Outfits Let Your Family Shine
At the end of the day, your outfits are there to complement your family — not become the focus of your photos.
Choose colors that work together. Keep patterns intentional. Skip distracting logos and neon shades. Most importantly, wear clothes that allow everyone to feel comfortable and like themselves.
When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it becomes much easier to forget about the camera and focus on the people you love. And those are the moments I want to photograph.
